Appalachian Efforts For Social Change


Since 1987 the Appalachian Community Fund (ACF) has been making a difference – helping create social change in West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee.

ACF funds and encourages grassroots social change in Central Appalachia. ACF works to build a sustainable base of resources to support community-led organizations seeking to overcome and address issues of race, economic status, gender, sexual identity, and disability. As a community-controlled fund, ACF offers leadership to expand and strengthen the movement for social change through its practices and policies.

Their efforts range from mentoring teenagers and guiding them toward college, supporting women in emotional crisis to keeping the only public clinic serving the poor open. And ACF has forced changes in the Federal Black Lung Program for miners and those in mining areas and they have helped protect endangered forests in the Appalachian region.

Gifted Nations Positive Messages Against Bullying

We may have missed their June 2012 fundraising performance but their message and their mission are something we don't want to overlook. Gifted Nations is a talented local Southern California multicultural girls' group. Their musical  mission is conveying positive messages to teens of encouragement, about tolerance and against bullying.  These young ladies also  demonstrate these messages in life. May 26, 2012 they gained positive attention and media coverage  by launching their first annual "Day Of Positive Tweets" encouraging us all to send positive tweets including  stories, quotes, poem and photos. Among those taking notice was Oscar winning actress and TV host Mo'Nique. In June Gifted Nations joined in to help nonprofit Saving Our Daughters spread the word against bullying  in California. The It Gets Better Project

itgetsbetter.org In September 2010 after a number of gay, lesbian and transgender youth taking their own lives as a result of bullying Dan Savage and his partner Terry Miller made a YouTube video to create a personal way for supporters around the world to spread the word and outreach to LGBT youth letting them know that it does get better. The It Gets Better Project is now a worldwide movement with more than 60,000 personally created videos  and shared stories that have been viewed over 50 million times. The project has received celebrity submissions including President Obama, Hilary Clinton, Ann Hathaway, Colin Farrell, Adam Lambert, Sarah Silverman, Ellen DeGeneres and many others. In March 2011 the It Gets Better Project book was released.
