  greatnonprofits.org In 2019-2020, Better Basics served 21,987 students in 35 Central Alabama schools.      Better Basics was founded over 25 years ago by John Glasser who saw the direct correlation between poverty and illiteracy. The nonprofit makes a positive difference in the lives of its community’s children and their families by advancing reading and mathematical literacy through enrichment and intervention programs.  Better Basics' Birmingham Reads program uses hundreds of volunteers to read in Birmingham city schools pre-kindergarten through 5 th grade. The Southern Rural Black Woman’s Initiative (SRBWI), founded in 2000, works in 77 counties across the Black Belt regions of Alabama and Southwest Georgia, and the Delta in Mississippi. SRBWI is focused on meeting the needs of unemployed and underemployed Black women using advocacy, self empowerment, capacity building, technical assistance and public education activities so that low income women become advocates for themselves and others.  The organization’s mission is to support and facilitate the capacity of women to take responsibility for their own personal and economic lives. Melissa Hargett is a successful Alabama business woman. She launched the Shoals Area Families Foundation (SAF) to assist temporarily impoverished families with making ends meet. Families that request assistance also sign up as part of an innovative "give back program," where in exchange for support they agree to volunteer at start-up local thrift shop. Shoals Area Families was formed to assist local temporarily impoverished families with utilities, food and shelter to give them a way to give back and to train them with a new skill that will hopefully break the cycle of impoverishment. The mission is simple -One to take person at a time over the poverty line. SAF is opening a thrift store to help fund the foundation.  They have a 10,000 square foot building where they take donations, process items, and sale the merchandise.
